April 20, 2001
Greetings friends and colleagues!
Please save JUNE 8 to attend
our annual meeting (official agenda here)
at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt in Manhattan. We have a fabulous program: the morning
session will be spent with our own Deborah Hornstra (webmaster extraordinaire
and Sarah Lawrence Health Advocacy graduate) and Mac Robinson, Vice President
for Personal Membership Groups of the American Hospital Association. Deb
and Mac will offer their takes on the condition of political and legislative
matters at state and federal levels and what the new administration will
bring to the state of healthcare. This is bound to be a lively discussion.
We’ll spend the afternoon
with Marsha Hurst, Director of the Healthcare Advocacy Program at Sarah
Lawrence College, and Ruby Greene, past president of our Society and entrepreneur
(Ruby recently retired from her patient rep position at Long Island College
Hospital in Brooklyn to work full time for herself). Marsha and Ruby
have developed a set of core competencies critical for every patient representative
to ensure a solid knowledge base. We will break into small work groups
to study this document and make our recommendations. The goal is to use
this document to forward our aim of developing a certification for patient
reps, thus legitimizing and elevating our profession to a place where it
has long stood, but has stood unrecognized.
You’ll be receiving registration
materials shortly but, in the meantime, please hold the date.
On to more pressing business.
It’s that time of year to
bring forth your nominations for the Board. Our year runs from July 1 –
June 30. We need a president, president-elect, secretary, treasurer, and
two members-at-large. The Board meets once a month, and several of us teleconference
to the host site. Living in Rochester, there’s no way I could travel each
month to a meeting, so this technology is a blessing. Please consider offering
your service to this worthwhile enterprise. Serving on the Board requires
some time and energy, for sure, but it has been a privilege and honor for
me, allowing me to get to know colleagues from around the state and at
the national level and exposing me to information I don’t typically come
across in my day-to-day work life.
Again, please consider adding
your own name or the name of someone whom you know would serve the Society
well. Without your willingness to join in, our Society may not remain viable.

then one year as past president):
